The following provisions are typically included in qualifying term life policies at no extra cost, allowing access to a portion of the death benefit while living under qualifying circumstances:

Chronic Illness — Access a portion of the death benefit if unable to perform certain activities of daily living.

Critical Illness — Access a portion of the death benefit upon diagnosis of a covered critical illness (e.g. heart attack, stroke, cancer).

Convertibility — Many term policies include the right to convert to a permanent (whole or universal) life policy later, without a new medical exam — a valuable option if your health changes.

Child Term Insurance Rider — Provides term life coverage for eligible dependent children under the insured's policy.

Waiver of Premium for Disability — Waives the policy premium if the insured becomes totally disabled and unable to work. Definition of total disability varies by carrier — some use “own occupation,” others use “any occupation.” Please review the specific policy rider for the applicable definition.

Accelerated Death Benefit (ADB) — While often included at no cost (see “What’s Included” above), some carriers offer an enhanced ADB rider providing higher benefit limits for an additional premium.
